Gray screen with circled diagonal

2011Macbook Pro will turn on, enter password then screen turns gray with circled diagonal symbol. It will not go to opening screen page? Your help is greatly appreciated!

I would add last night an update was being installed (it was an automatic update and I don’t know what) it showed 27 minutes remaining when I went to bed.
