My iPhone 6 Plus backs up manually but does not back up automatically when plugged in on locked screen and connected to WiFi. I have tried everything including restoring the phone as a new device. I’ve also tried deleting old back ups, resetting network settings. Nothing has worked. This all seemed to start when I upgraded to IOS 11.

Go to iCloud make sure iCloud back up is on.
Have you got the latest ios software 11.2?

Thanks Brian. But no, upgrading to 11.2 Did not help. The only thing that I can think of is that one of my apps is corrupted. But why does it work fine when I manually “Back Up Now”?
