The battery has been dying for some time so that's probably the answer. It's an old Macbook Pro and Apple tell me it's obsolete! Tried taking the back off this afternoon to see if we could get to the trackpad once the battery was removed but couldn't remove all the specialist screws so defeated. I think I may be heading towards a new machine. Thanks so much for your response.
