If I send an e-mail with an attachment both created on my Mac under Sierra to my wife's tablet running IOS 11 she cannot open it. What am I doing wrong? She can open Microsoft word attachments. Other people with iPads have also had the same problem so I do not believe it is anything to do with the settings on my wife's machine.

Thanks for the reply. My attachments are produced in NeoOffice - an Open Source equivalent of Microsoft Office developed by Sun Microsystems. The file extension is .odt. I tick the 'windows friendly' box on the attachment insertion page.
Interesting. I suspect that the MIME type of the attachment is one that iOS does not recognize. Can you peek at the full email source in your sent mail, to see what it says? Obviously, I don't know what "windows-friendly" means, or whether it would make the email more iOS-friendly. Is it possible to save your document in a more generally-known format, like docx maybe?
Hi. An iPad can only open files if a suitable app is available. What file type is the attachment?
Thanks for the suggestions but you're getting beyond my level of competence so I guess I'll just have to live with the problem - or start using Microsoft Word
NeoOffice can save your document in a format that would be recognized by an iPad. You could try saving as an RTF, or DOC File.
