Can’t open Magic mouse

The batteries needed replacing last week in my Magic Mouse - always a simple task. But I am unable to get the panel open to do this - this has never happened before. The release catch moves but the panel is stuck.

Any ideas how to fix this, or do I need to spend silly money buying a new one.
