macbook pro only starts to root base

When I restart with command-r there is no 1Tb harddrive showing, only a 2Gb root drive. Will not let me restore, reinstall, verify, nor run disk utility or even show the big hard drive. Any thoughts?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
