.mbox

I'm on a MacAir running High Sierra. I have emails stored in .mbox files on an external drive. Since upgrading to High Sierra, I cannot access these files. I receive the message "“mbox” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer." When I override this in system preferences, my log reports a syntax error and logs out. Is there a way to retrieve the stored emails?
