My microphone works on Facetime but not on Skype

A couple of times now I have had the frustration of joining a Skype conference call where I can connect hear type but no one can hear me. My assumption was that I had some setting wrong with my microphone but it works fine on Facetime. I did the Skype echo test but that suggested my mike was not working.
