Tried to update to 10.13.2 Installation froze

Noticed from the App app that there was an upgrade to the mac os - 10.13.2 Shut things down and told it to run. The update got stuck at abut 85% after which the progress bar did not move. I just boot from my hard drive using its 10.13.1 and after a night of work am finally running. I don't know how to get the partial installation off my machine and wondered if others had this problem.

Thanks for help. 1) How exactly do I update 2) How do I get rid of that truncated installation

10.13.1 ---> 10.13.2

macOS High Sierra (10.13), mail app 11

Yes. You cannot avoid it, I'm afraid, based on what information you have provided. If you don't have backups then be sure to remember to backup before any update or upgrade to the OS. Things don't usually go badly, but they can.

Then you must do the following:

Install El Capitan or Later from Scratch

Backup if possible before continuing.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
  4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  5. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  8. Select Install OS X and click on the Continue button.

I agree, PicoMc. I am really ticked off as well. Notice the comment above about destroying the legacy.... I still haven't got my problem sorted - downloaded the faulty Hi Sierra 10.13.2 and now have no e-mail to my Mac, no incoming from Yahoo and Yahoo's web page is frozen, no graphics. The other thing is, how can I even receive an answer if I have no email???? I come back looking for the questions I asked and now I can't find that either. This is not good to say the least.😢 I tried to pose the question again and got a message, "not allowed." Doesn't even sound like Apple does it?!

Along with being a “me, too “ case, let me add a warning- I tried the update twice from the App Store, and it hung up. Both times. So, being persistent, I went to Apple Support and downloaded the Combo Update. After the installer restarted my MacBook Pro, the progress bar quit during restart, and the Mac restarted itself. It kept going back to a restart several times more. The shift key didn’t help. An attempt at zapping PRAM made no difference, either.

-Fortunately, I had a Time Machine backup that was only minutes old, along with a bootable USB hard drive connected. I’m in the middle of a 5-6 hour restoration right now. Anyhow, the standalone update had the same problem that others had. Whatever you do, have a backup first. However, there’s obviously something weird about this update; I’d recommend you avoid this one.

Well this is pure awesome, I've been a PC user for 22 years and due to minor annoyances with my surface book I decided to give apple a try and bought a brand new 2017 15 inch Pro for nearly $3k and it's now not even booting after trying to install this update (and nothing else yet, yep, this is right out of the box!). Back to my Microsoft device as I type! Not a great start of our relationship here Apple!

When I ran this update, it hung for a long time (20 minutes), then restarted a 2nd time and continued processing and finished after about another 11 minutes. In other words, for others reading this thread, I advise being patient. This process will appear to hang, but may actually still be working. If that’s the case, restarting before it finishes could be catastrophic.

Your right out of the box Mac is well within the window to take to your nearest Apple store, or return at no cost to you, for repair. Your experience is the rare exception, not the norm. Abandoning the computer and the brand based on this single unfortunate experience is unreasonable. I can offer the complete opposite anecdote, with great Apple products and service since 1994. My most recent iMac bought last year has been incredible, and it replaced my previous iMac which gave me over 12 years of exceptional service and operation.
