imovie 10.1.8 crashes repeatedly

I did use imovie 10.1.8 to edit a one minute video clip. But now that I want to try a bigger project, I can't get the app to even open properly. imovie rarely gets past 'open project' before it crashes. Inserting a title page is an instant crash. Well, I've never been able to get it open to even try editing my second little project.

I've deleted plist files. I've restarted. I have done kabooki dance.

Does this even work for anyone? If it does, how can it work for me?
