Mic Failure on iPhone 8 in Voice Memo

Audio recording in Voice Memo is extremely weak and noisy, even when speaking loudly into the mic. Same problem with another third party recording app. Mic works fine with the telephone, Siri and in video recording. Running latest software, no case on phone. Volume is set to max. App has mic permission. Have rebooted multiple times.
