My mother noticed that her iphone X displays the black screen with a spinning wheel in the middle when she unlocks her phone.
She doesn’t have face ID setup so she unlocks it via a passcode.
It could be a iOS problem right? She’s running iOS 11.2

This is a bug I too have noticed with the iPhone X, however not with unlocking the phone. I believe I was quitting an application, and the spinning wheel showed up. Shortly after, it quit as normal and I was able to continue using a phone. It's a bug with the software and should be fixed in the next update.

It sounds like you'r 11.2 update didn't take or didn't process properly, as this should fix the issue.
Try updating via iTunes instead (2nd half of instructions):
iphone X puts spinning wheel when unlocking the phone with passcode.
