After I installed macOS High Sierra on my Macbook Pro, my Macbook Pro doesn't read my external optical drive

I have an early 2011 Mac Book Pro but it has a relatively new mother board. I recently upgraded to OS High Sierra 10.13.1. I used to be able to use an external optical drive to download CDs to my iTunes. Now, after the upgrade, my computer reads the external optical drive as a Remote Disc but will not read any discs on it. What can I do to so my computer reads my cds on my external optical drive?
