External hard drive not working properly on Macbook Air

My external hard drive, Toshiba Canvio, 3tb, usb 3.0 appears on the desktop, is mounted but when i open the hard drive and i try to play a movie is not working. Looks like the hard drive is going to sleep or it is frozen.How can I fix this ?
