Language preference shows no effect

I have iOS 11. Even though I have explicitly selected German (Germany) as the iPod language, the calendar and other apps show me Austrian “Jänner” instead of German “Januar” (January)! I guess it depends on the selected region (Italy in my case), but they can’t just switch to Austrian German if I explicitly select German (Germany)!
