Cannot Turn Off Find My iPhone

I am trying to restore an earlier backup but whenever I try to turn off find my iphone it says:

There was a problem removing this iphone from your account. Try turning Find My iPhone off again.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2

Are you trying to sign out of iCloud or are you just turning find my phone off by itself?

I’m just trying to turn it off so I can restore a previous backup.
