ipad authentication lock

I have been using my dad's i pad since he died 6 years ago, no password or anything. All of a sudden last night the message came up saying Authentication Lock is on and I need to unlock it using original apple id etc, I don't have my dad's password so is the i pad now completely useless?

Hi. That's Activation Lock, actually. An Apple store can unlock it, if you can provide proof of ownership. That would probably include the original receipt, and the death certificate. Remember, this is an anti-theft mechanism, so you need absolute proof that the device was not stolen.
