Pages and Numbers documents will not open

There are are several documents in the Pages and Numbers App on my iPad Pro and also my iPhone 6s that cannot be opened. Error message is “file is damaged and cannot be opened”. Any suggestions as to how to recover these documents. Newer documents will open.
