Update & reset dictation

Why does every update reset Siri back to frustratingly hard to work with? Dictation worked great and then I updated both my watch and my phone and now I want to throw them across the room since they catch half of what I say or don’t understand me anymore.

You obviously spent a decent amount of time putting together a very logical flow for potential troubleshooting. But the truth is you and the original poster seem to be talking past one another because he outlines his problems in the first two sentences and many of your steps assume he doesn’t even have dictation turned on. I’m just saying my business and this is that I am also suffering on iOS 11.2. It’s like I had a voice model that used to be carried between encrypted iTunes backups and at some point in the last few months we have started over like we are complete strangers. I get unbelievably bad transcription and from my perspective nothing has changed except moving from the iPhone 7 to the iPhone X on 12/24 ( with a special thanks to the Uber driver who stole my phone that I left behind and put it in airplane mode so that I have not been able to track or erase it).

I don’t mean to be critical of the guide you put together for the original poster, but it’s shortcomings are why I collected the ‘me too’ button for this problem.

I believe that even an average iPhone user is trustworthy to make the observation that the original poster made in terms of a dramatic change and I trust that he, like me, had a pretty fundamental/understandable change: he got new equipment and now it feels like they are on day zero of the transcription model.

Can you shed any light on that or do any of your level 10 friends have the ability to weigh in or get some more help? Thank you in advance and happy new year and absolutely no disrespect meant. Appreciate your trying to help us. My phone is all of two weeks old. My Siri woes are just as bad on speakerphone as they are over iPods.

Hi

The following steps may help (check after each):

If you have not yet done so, update both your iPhone and your Apple Watch 1st generation to the latest software, starting with your iPhone (be sure to make a backup first):

On your iPhone:

  • Go to: Settings > Siri & Search - check the all desired settings are enabled.
  • Go to: Settings > General > Restrictions - check that the restriction for Siri & Dictation is not enabled.
  • Go to: Settings > General > Keyboard - check that Enable Dictation is turned on.

  • On your Apple Watch:

    • When viewing the time on your watch, go to the Home screen by pressing the Digital Crown (round button) once.
    • Go to: Settings (cog icon) > General > Siri > check that Hey Siri is turned on.

If you are using the "Hey Siri" command, check that you are using the feature correctly:

In order to use Siri on Apple Watch, check that your Apple Watch is connected as required:

Remove any protective case or film that you may be using on your Apple Watch if it is blocking the microphone port (the lower of the two ports on the opposite side to the buttons):

Clean your Apple Watch, paying particular attention to the microphone port, in case it has become blocked by debris.

Hold your Apple Watch closer to your face.

Restart your Apple Watch and iPhone, turning both devices off together, then restarting your iPhone first:

Follow the other steps here, under "If Siri doesn't respond or asks you to try again":

If the issue persists, having checked the settings above, next try unpairing and re-pairing your Apple Watch again:

If the issue still persists, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:
