Problem adding new contract

MacOS 10.13.2 When I try to add a new contact, after entering first and last name, the contacts app refused to allow me to tab down to the phone number field, and the new contract does not get added. Also if I try to add a phone number, say: 1112223333, then I expect it to reformat to a human readable form; for example: (111) 222-3333
