Because that's the way Apple designed the interface. Unless an App is not working properly, there is no legitimate reason to terminate them this way. In terms of battery life, it is actually counterproductive.
iPhone X closing apps. Why not just swipe up like old style instead of having to hold first?

There is no need to do anything.
IOS suspends apps when not in use. No need to "close" them as you describe.
Why do i have to hold down for a second to close apps on iphone X? why arent we able to just swipe up to close an app like on the iphone 6s?
