MacOS High Sierra

Since updating to macOS High Sierra my app icons disappear and a generic gray box appears. When I click on the icon I get a message: You can't open the application"_" because it may be damaged or incomplete. This is very scary. What's going on?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
