am I alone in having the update stop during the restart phase? After logging in, it tries to continue, but I get a blank screen with a gray circle slash. My laptop is not doing anything but displaying said image.w

Means no operating system installed or a corrupted disk.
So an install stop in the middle is equal to No operating system.
I hope you have some recent backups.
An Apple genius bar should answer the problem.
They will certainly keep your computer, find if the disk is not dead.
They will certainly erase the disk.
So really hope you have some backups!

AFTER THE LAST UPDATE , I HAD "White screen and grey circle crossed by a line" , I DID THE FOLLOWING WHICH WORKED FOR ME
