Question: 100's of "Disks not ejected properly"

I have always had 1-5 of these alerts from time-to-time, easily dealt with. But This just started happening 2 days ago! I mean there are >50 of these alerts and each one has to be "closed" individually - or I have to re-start MBP! Anytime I leave the computer unattended now these extended lists show up!

How to abort this nonsense/inconvenience [- never happened before High Sierra]

OOPS! Overnight the same mess recurred! Energy Saver was still uncheck. I moved slider to Never Sleep.

When I tried to run Disk Utility on the relevant external HD, the app froze and I had to Force Quit. Now The disk is not mounted.
