How do you close tabs while FaceTiming

Just purchased my IPhone X today and I’m already dealing with an issue. When I try to close tabs while FaceTiming it just goes back to FaceTime. I try pressing the red - to close the tab but it just keeps going back to FaceTime. The only way I can close tabs is to turn off my phone and turn it back on without it just going back to FaceTime.
