Final Cut Pro X Performance Lag

When editing in FCPX I frequently encounter a massive slowdown in performance. Logging out or restarting fixes the problem, but this is not ideal. On a simple project (a few clips and a < 1min timeline), I can usually go about 45 minutes but complicated ones with multiple layers require a log out or system restart about every 10 minutes.

Previous versions of FCPX before 10.3.4 never had this hangup. Anybody else have similar problems? If it can't be fixed, I'm curious if this is the RAM getting jammed up, cpu or a cache of some kind? The Activity Monitor didn't show anything I was able to interpret as the cause.

Specs: 1080p 24fps timelines with down-scaled 4K footage - viewing Proxy only.

System: 2014 macbook pro 15" with 16GB RAM / ~200GB free on SSD

No plug-ins. No external drives. No other apps open.

Grateful for any help! Thanks!

Final Cut Pro X, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), Macbook Pro 17" mid 2014 16GB RAM

Does deleting the unused render files help? (File->Delete Generated Library Files)
