Primary disc says, "SMART Status: failing"

I've had problems with this imac since I purchased it and installed a pc operating system at a time when Apple claimed to run windows better than a pc. We all know how that turned out! The machine at one point would only boot up as a windows machine and I had to reinstall the apple operating system and then the windows operating system. Almost every time I installed a windows update, the apple operating system either became glitchy or failed. Apple people swore to me that one had nothing to do with the other. ********. Eventually, the hard drive failed after a windows update. I was able to repair it through a series of permission repairs and then use the disc repair, which now recognized the hard drive. It took hours. Several months later, the drive failed permanently. I hadn't had the machine a year yet. Rather than replace the machine, they replaced the hard drive with a drive that I suspect had an expiration date as around Christmas of the next year, I got a warning that my HD was failing, could not be repaired and needed to be replaced. I immediately wanted to purchase a new iMac, but then I caught myself. Fast forward: my HD has been failing for three years now with no discernable problems, only I can't install an update operating system because of its status. Even the Apple people eventually told me to ignore the SMART Status warning.

Is there some way to erase what must be a coded expiration date on the replace drive so I can update the system? Is anyone out there that good?
