How do I reformat external hard disk?

Hi

Problems with external disk.I need to reformat. I have looked in disk utilities but nan not see reformat, any advice. I am using iMac OS 10.13.2

2.93GHz Intel Core i7, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Memory 8GB also Mac OS X now (10.7)

Select Disk Utility from the utilities window of macOS Recovery, then click Continue.
Select your device or volume in the sidebar of Disk Utility.
Click the Erase button or tab.
Complete these fields:
- Name: Enter a name for your disk, such as "Macintosh HD".
- Format:Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS.
- Scheme (if available): Choose GUID Partition Map.
Click Erase to begin erasing your disk.

Hi Boullederose

I have tried the erase way but there seems to be a problem with the disk after getting a virus as now when the disk is connected which I use for Timemachine the computer slows down and keeps re starting but if I do not connect the external alls well.
