I bought a new phone and I am trying to erase my iPhone 7 plus to give to a family member. I get thru the entire process then i'm asked to give my Apple password and it doesn't recognize. I already deleted my old device from my account, maybe this is the issue or maybe i need to be on wifi.
any suggestions?

I would try connecting to wifi. In order to sign out of and remove iCloud and activation lock, the device needs an internet connection to verify with Apple's iCloud servers.
