Put printer back online

I have 2 iMacs and a MBAir all running macOS 10.13.2. My printer is a Canon MF733Cdw. Everything was working just fine. I left for a few days and powered down the iMacs. Now the printers show as Offline. I can't figure out how to get it back on line on the iMacs. I tried resetting on one of the iMacs and that blew away everything. So a printer reset is a no-go. Also, when I powered up the MBA the printer was Offline, with no obvious sway to get it online.

The printer is definitely connected to my network. My scanner shows it. And I can log in to it.

The obvious way to fix this is to reinstall the drivers. But that is unacceptable as a long term fix: I can't be reinstalling the drivers on the MBA every time I power it up, or we lose power around here and everything drops. I need a fix to keep the iMacs and MBA connected to the printer.

Some background info. I did the erase/install of HS on all 3 computers in late Nov. Subsequently my old multifunction

printer (Brother) lost WiFi capability, and was recycled. I picked up this Canon MF733Cdw on sale at a local big box retailer. Everything set up and was working just fine. HS had been updated with all required patches, to that point. Last week I was gone for a few days and powered off the 2 iMacs. The MBA was also powered off. I arrived home yesterday and powered up the iMacs, and discovered an Apple update ready. I did not think to check printer/scanner functionality before updating the 3 computers. Subsequent to updating I tried to print something, and discovered that on all 3 computers the printer was Offline. So here we are.

Here's the Etrecheck report. I just noticed that com.apple.cdpd.plist is not loading. No idea what that means. Google isn't helpful there. The PIA launch agent is also reported to fail to launch, however the app works just fine when I manually launch it. And Time Machine does back up, just that I use a scheduler.

Yes, that is exactly what I did on iMac #1. I then added back the via the IP address with IPP protocol selected. HS did install it, but only the printing function. Scan and Fax functionality are not there. So I reset it once again and this time tried setting it up with the Air Print option. HS did install it, but only the printing function. Scan and Fax functionality are not there.

I also tried reinstalling the printer and scanner drivers. That did not work. I still have a printer but no scan/fax functionality.

BTW, I also need to be able to have the printer/scanner functionality available when I power up my MBA.

I just ran Etrecheck. It shows the scanner launch agents as running.

I am well aware of the opinions re: security SW, having started a discussion on the very subject recently. Be advised that my other iMac and MBA have no security SW whatsoever. They have barebones set ups. Those other 2 computers are experiencing the same printer/scanner problem as iMac #1.

If I delete com.apple.cdpd.plist will the OS reinstall it and load it properly?

Dec 11, 2017 12:38 PM in response to DesertRatR

My MBA has a bare bones HS installation with no security SW, no nothing other than what comes with HS. I reset the printer and predictably it disappeared. With the previous printer/scanner set up the OS found the drivers on my network. This time that didn't work. I had to download the drivers. Printers & Scanners shows only the printer, with the scanner button missing. So I am going to assume that Old Toad is correct, that Apple broke the scanner functionality with this latest update.

I tried vuescan on the MBA. And since no good deed goes unpunished, it can't find the scanner. Something else to debug.

Dec 11, 2017 2:50 PM in response to Old Toad

The scanner is brand new and one of Canon's latest models. I did reboot it and that allowed VueScan to find it. However, I still can't scan. I emailed the log file to VueScan and he reported that something on my network is blocking the scanner. The is very odd, because it was working just fine, until Apple broke it. The FW on the computer is off. There is no security SW of any kind. The WAP that the scanner is talking to is a Time Capsule. And as I reported previously, I can see it just fine from the computer.
