Question: iPhone X availablity

I am thinking about purchasing an IPhone X without a contract here in the United States for someone in India. Would it work for them?

While it may support the LTE bands in India, it might not. The carrier in India would be able to determine if it does by the model number. Also, the warranty is only good here in the US, so if there was a problem with the phone, it would have to be brought back to the US for service. It cannot be shipped to Apple, as they do not accept international shipments.

Also, the SIM-free version of the iPhone is in very short supply here now, so it could be a while before you are able to get one. It could be especially hard if you are traveling to the US just to purchase the phone.
