osx for vintage macbook

How does one determine the last or newest OSX that a vintage Macbook Pro can run? I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro currently running El Capitan 10.11.6.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), Model A1286 late 2008, 8 gb RAM
