Systems taking up 120gb of dad’s phone!

Hey all,

My dad’s iPhone 6 has been acting up (slow to respond, ***** itself down, hangs for a while, unresponsive, etc). After checking Settings > Storage, I found that his Systems is taking up 121 GB of space. He really doesn’t wnt to loose som of his data but no mbackups, wethere iCloud or iTunes, have worked. Any advice? Most of what he needs is in WhatsApp, but it says it needs 25 GB of storage to do so, and we can’t figure out what’s going on.

Thanks

Hi AousM,

Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.

I see you're troubleshooting your dad's phone which is showing that "System" is using an unexpected amount of storage and isn't backing up to iCloud or iTunes.

Start with the troubleshooting tips in these articles to see if they help with creating a backup:

If iCloud Backup couldn’t be completed or you can’t restore - Apple Support

If your iTunes backup couldn't be completed or you can't restore from a backup - Apple Support
You can also try backing up WhatsApp data using the method provided within the app, which is detailed on the WhatsApp site:
WhatsApp FAQ - Restoring your chat history
Note that it may be necessary to upgrade his iCloud storage in order to backup the amount of data you're working with:
iCloud storage plans and pricing - Apple Support

When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. If you need more space in iCloud, you can upgrade to a larger storage plan.

Sincerely.
