Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Which is the better approach? Adding memory to my aged iMac or upgrading to a new iMac?

I'm trying to decide if I would significantly benefit by adding more memory to the current iMac (it is upgradeable) or by upgrading to a new 21.5 iMac, 3.0 GHz, 8 GB memory, 1 TB storage (5400), especially given several articles detailing slow performance on the new iMac's. I've attached a current Etrecheck report. While it shows the presence of Malwarebytes, it is not running in "real time" mode. When I do run in Real Time the measured performance drops to "Below Average". Hopefully the report helps. I don't want to spend $1.5K to $2K only to discover the performance gain is disappointing. Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you.

I have a similar configured late 2009, 27 inch iMac.

RAM is not very expensive for these older Macs.

I have 16 GBs of RAM in my iMac running OS X 10.11 El Capitàn and my iMac still runs pretty well.

You could install just another 8 GBs of RAM and your 2010 iMac should run much better.

You MUST use THE EXACT RAM that your model iMac is spec'd for.

and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory (crucial .com) or OWC, aka, Other World Computing (macsales.com).

When buying RAM for Macs from Crucial memory, purchase ONLY directly from the Crucial memory website. NOT from some other online source.

RAM modules are, relatively, easy to install.

For the new 21.5 inch iMac, I TOTALLY agree with den.thed.

Avoid the 1st, base model iMac, choose between the middle and top of line 21.5 inch iMac models and get these with, at least, 16 GBs of RAM and a full SSD for storage. Either a 512 GBs SSD or 1TB SSD.

Forget any regular spinning, 5400 RPM mechanical hard drives or fusion drives as the fusion drives pair a low storage SSD with a 5400 RPM spinning hard drive.

Good Luck to You!

If the 2010's hardware is good, then I might stick with it for awhile longer.

Besides 2 x 2GB modules is only $30 and 2 x 4GB modules is only $70 from OWC

OWC Performance Upgrades for iMac 2010

or slightly more for the same modules from Crucial

If your wanting a new 21.5" iMac, then do not settle for anything less than the 3.4GHz, a 512GB SSD and 16GB of RAM at $2K.

Customize iMac - Apple

Dec 11, 2017 4:25 PM in response to rkaufmann87

I have the identical machine and have upgraded it to 12 GB of RAM. I am not plagued by system slowness and am comfortable with overall performance. The RAM increase to 12 GB helped things considerably (and in fact a min of 8 GB is recommended for current OS systems), but the RAM really only helps on repetitive processes (like shutting down a program and then later in the day restarting it. A repetitive action often restarts instantly as the program is / was already loaded in RAM earlier in the day). However, I see one thing in the Ertrecheck report that is undoubtedly bogging you down... On both reports you have a 180 MB of "swap" memory used. That means that your system is using the HD as if it were RAM and parking data there temporarily. The OS under the "swap" system transfers data back & forth from the HD to RAM and can really be a bottle neck. You might want to reduce a number (all of them?) of launch items then re-introduce them as needed to see if that helps. Anything to reduce the "swap" number should help your over-all speed.

Dec 12, 2017 7:28 AM in response to domfromjacksonville beach

I'm not sure I'd spend money on a 7+ year old computer at this point. Add another recommendation on a new iMac to a) get enough RAM and b) NOT get a 5400 rpm drive - it does everything 33% slower than a stock 7200 rpm drive in 27" iMacs. Even those are a bit slow by today's standards, so a full SSD would be ideal; if the cost is too prohibitive, then at least make sure you get a 7200 rpm drive. And, get at least 12 - 16 GB RAM total. With that you should be set for some time to come.

Dec 12, 2017 9:52 AM in response to domfromjacksonville beach

I must say that I too agree that a new Mac, configured appropriately, would be my 1 st choice. I neglected to say this before. One thing to keep in mind is that the new 21.5" Macs do NOT have user-upgradeable RAM. What you have in the machine is what you will have for the life of the machine, so be sure to configure it for future needs when you buy a new one (if you do buy a new one). Good luck with it !

Pokey B,

Not entirely true any longer.

The RAM in these new 21.5 inch iMacs CAN be upgrade at a later time, now, but ONLY by Apple.

The user cannot install the RAM, but Apple Stores can!

The RAM in the brand new 2017, 21.5 inch screen iMacs can be upgraded ONLY by Apple, now!

See this article as reference and proof.

Not true in the least bit! OWC provides the RAM and a kits

with everything needed to do the upgrade:

Memory Upgrades for iMac (3.00 GHz, Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Mid 2017)

However, it does require "cracking" the case open and therefore voiding

the warranty, but it can be done!

Dec 12, 2017 10:57 AM in response to woodmeister50

I mentioned in another posting that Apple CAN do the RAM upgrade in the newer 21 inch screen model iMacs.

It CAN be done, NOT just by the user.

Apple Stores CAN upgrade the RAM in these new 21 inch screen model iMacs, now!

Apple has made it though that ONLY they can perform the RAM upgrade in the new, 2017, 21 inch screen models.

This was well documented when the new, 2017 model iMacs were introduced.

If still curious, look for another article about this.

While this is quite true it doesn't seem to me to be a very attractive option. I mean to buy a new computer, then have it cracked open, breaking adhesive joints, then, after the RAM install, having to clean the seal surfaces back to original pre-assembly condition (hopefully), then reapply adhesive, close it up and expect to have a machine that is in the same condition as factory-built. I know it's more expensive but I'd rather have an easy user-upgradeable situation as in the 27" screen Macs. But as they say, "it is what it is".

It’s better than the soldered on RAM, zero option for RAM upgrade that the older 2013-2015 models had!

That was dreadful!

Apple went back to upgradeable RAM, put back discreet GPUs in the mid and top level models, BUT STILL stuck all of the 21 inch screen models with 5400 RPM laptop drives and fusion drives with paired 5400 RPM drives!

Really???

Which is the better approach? Adding memory to my aged iMac or upgrading to a new iMac?
