no sound from external speakers

I can't get the new high sierra OS to recognize my external speakers now. I have the speakers plugged into the 3.5mm port and it will not show up in the "output" menu under sound in system preferences. I know the speakers work, because I plugged my phone into the same 3.5mm cable going into the system and it played audio fine. Please advise.

Hey Kuriouz1,

Thanks for reaching out via Apple Support Communities. From your post, it sounds like upgrading your iMac to macOS High Sierra affected your external speakers. Good job testing this with another device to confirm that the speakers work normally as well. Let's see if we can get this to work with your iMac again. What we can try here is to reset the SMC.
This link here can show you how:
How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
Let us know if this makes a difference or at least appears in your System Preferences.
Cheers
