Hi

The functions that are available on your Apple Watch when it is away from your iPhone depend on various factors including:

Features and requirements that apply under various circumstances are detailed here, including within the footnotes:

It is not necessary to take your iPhone along when recording workouts. Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) has built-in GPS, so, in addition to using data from the built-in accelerometer, it can also track results using GPS data without requiring your iPhone to be taken along, including recording route maps for certain outdoor workouts.

For the most accurate results:

Be sure to record your workout via the Workout app (or a third-party app that shares data to the Health app on your iPhone) and to select the activity type that most closely matches your workout (for example: Outdoor Run):

Check your Location Services settings:

  • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:
    • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
    • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
    • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

After your workout, once your data has synced to your iPhone (which happens automatically, after they have reconnected via Bluetooth), your route map and other workout data can be viewed via the Activity app on your iPhone:

  • On your iPhone, in the Activity app, go to: Workouts (tab) > tap on a workout > tap on the thumbnail image shown under the heading "Route".
