13 inch, late 2011 MacBook Pro running slow

Good day,

My 13 inch, late 2011 MacBook Pro has been running slow for some time. It has an i5 processor, 8GB memory, and 500 GB storage. I am currently running the High Sierra OS. I have't noticed much of a change when previously upgrading from Sierra or Maverick OS. I did have some slowing down in applications, programs, and files when I upgraded to Maverick OS. I've tried cleaning out extra files that I don't need and running first aid but I don't see a difference. When my computer is trying to open applications, programs, or files, the process usually takes a couple of minutes and results in beachballing. I am looking for suggestions on where to make changes to speed up my computer a little bit.

Thank you!
