"Messages"??? As in text messages?

Text messages are saved on the iPhone's backup if they were present when the backup was created. Restore the backup and the messages will re-appear (as will everything else from when the backup was created).

Hopefully wofes backed up their phone while messages on there. If that is the case, then restore the phone to that backup to restore the messages.
