What does a grey triangle with an exclamation mark mean?

I take photos on my iPhone which is synced to my laptop and desktop through iCloud. The desktop is set to download and store all photos locally.

Recently, some of the newer photos won't display on the desktop. Instead I only get a grey triangle with an exclamation mark. These photos are fine on the iPhone, or if I log into iCloud.com with Safari, so I don't know what's preventing them from properly downloading to my desktop...

Has anyone had a similar problem?

With no details one can only guess but It probably means that you have IOS 11 on your phone and are shooting in HEIC format - if that is the case then you need to either upgrade the Mac to HighSierra which supports HEIC of set the photo to use the Most compatible format for photos
