Help with strange Mac problems, kernel panic and other things

Hey there! My Mac has kernel panics about every 2-4 days and has for the past few months. Been trying to fix it but no leads as to why it’s doing this? As for the other problems, every time I try to restart it, whether it’s right after an update or not, the computer starts the restart normally but then stalls at the folder-less version of my desktop bg with a movable mouse?? I’ve left it like this for up to 2 hours so far and it just stayed there until I shut it down using the button on the back. I’m actually doing this again right now after downloading high Sierra. Also the kernel panics seem to often happen about 1 hour or so into me watching streamed content but not always. Any help on what to try is appreciated!! I couldn’t really find any similar problems elsewhere. (Also Just recently ColorSync utility has been opening all my jpegs and not preview?? It’s weird)

Hello Charmiespecs,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that you've been experiencing frequent kernel panics on your Mac. Also, your Mac will restart normally but folders are missing on your desktop. I can surely see how these issues could be concerning. I'm happy to help.

First, try testing the issue in safe mode. Starting in safe mode allows your Mac to run certain checks, remove caches, and prevent login items from automatically launching. This can isolate possible third party issues. Use the steps and information in the link below for assistance with safe mode:
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the issue persists, follow the steps in the "Additional Information" section of the link below:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

Have a wonderful day!
