MacBook Pro - shuts down automatically

MacBook Pro shuts down automatically since a week when I connect to my LG 34" widescreen monitor using the USB C connector.

Sometimes I can work a few minutes and sometimes a quarter of an hour. It always make a hard reboot and asks to report the issue to apple. Until now no response heard.

Hi Eric,

Have done the clean up and seems to have done the trick. Below the new report - does it look clean?

Not sure about the change with Bitdefender - feels so safe :-). What would you replace it with?

Best

Frank

With above, I do not understand how Bitdefender can be the only issue I have - what am I missing?

It might not be, but the first step in diagnosing a broken Mac is to rid it of utterly useless garbage. Get rid of it.

A. If asked what to replace Bitdefender with and hope to get a respons

You received those responses. If you did not see them, you should now. A bug with this site sometimes causes replies to be hidden until you post a newer reply.

The responses you received are valid. Remove "Bitdefender". Replace it with nothing. macOS already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Installing some non-Apple product will circumvent its built-in defenses thereby subjecting it to exploits due to vulnerabilities in those products, including vulnerabilities yet to be discovered. Let your Mac work the way it was designed to work. Read Effective defenses against malware and other threats.

B. I have had Bitdefender for over a year now and had no issues with it so far.

I understand. Now you do. It's causing a kernel panic, which will never occur on a properly working Mac.

The "anti-virus" peddlers are always trying to keep up with macOS updates and upgrades, and they always fail. Despite very public pronouncements from Apple regarding those releases, including beta releases given to developers months in advance, they can never seem to adapt. How well do you think they could respond to a real threat, one not announced in advance, one designed to be difficult to identify and eradicate?

Anyone or any thing that claims to protect macOS better than Apple ought to be treated with suspicion, if not outright derision. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk. Avoid theirs.

C. When I have my laptop open and not connected to monitor, I do not have an issue with restart.

I understand that too. Until you rid your Mac of the junk affecting it, you cannot begin to troubleshoot the problem.

Bitdefender removed - it helped for a long time, but still not totally fixed

Try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I would uninstall Bitdefender. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. I would also uninstall the BitDefender Safari extension.

You basically verified that the monitor was not the issue. Thank you for going through the trouble to check that out for us.

I believe that Eric Root has provided you with sound advice related to the results of your EtreCheck report. The Bitdefender kernel extensions were causing havoc with your Mac's operating system and the main reason for the system crashes and subsequent shut-downs.

Your last report still shows Bitdefender components installed and active on your system. If you look under the section, titled: Top Processes by CPU, you'll see two processes (BDLDaemon & mdworker) using up most of your CPU. BDLDaemon is part of Bitdefender. mdworker, on the other hand, is directly related to the Spotlight app.

A. If asked what to replace Bitdefender with and hope to get a respons

I wouldn't replace it with anything. However, if you are insistent on having an anti-virus program on your Mac, I would suggest that you check out ClamXav. macOS already has a built-in anti-malware engine and an anti-virus program is not necessary.

B. I have had Bitdefender for over a year now and had no issues with it so far.

Not according to the results of the EtreCheck report. Your Mac has experienced a number of Kernel Panics due to this application.

Dec 16, 2017 6:48 AM in response to John Galt

Hi John, thank you for your help. I will remove ClamXAV (which was advised to me on this forum with the same topic, but would appreciate if you can stop referring to things as Junk. I have a lot of respect for people and want to make sure we can keep respecting each other.
