New iPhone X Won't Read Text Messages Anymore

Hi: When I was driving or working in the kitchen and got a new text message, I used to be able to just ask Siri, hands free, to read my new text to me and I could reply or not to the text. With my new iPhone X, that is gone. It asks me to unlock the screen first. Well, that defeats the purpose of being able to use it hands free. Anyone have a work around for this issue? I can't seem to find anything useful written about it yet. Thank you.
