Blank dvd not mounting

My dvd drive is not mounting any blank dvds

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Try this:

macOS Sierra: If you don’t see a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drive(Document Type: Document) Mar 28, 2017 If you don’t see a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drive Your Mac may not have an optical drive. To check whether your Mac has a drive, do the following: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click Storage, then look for SuperDrive or another optical drive. If you don’t see a drive listed that supports discs in CD, DVD, or Blu-ray format, it means an optical drive isn’t available. If your Mac doesn’t have a built-in optical drive, you can Use another computer’s DVD or CD drive, or use an external opticalhttps://support.apple.com/kb/PH25315?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I believe my drive is failing. It will burn one disc, then eject a series of discs without mounting, and then keep a disc without mounting it (not visible in finder) and the only way to eject it is to fully shut down and then start up again. Then it will burn one disc and the process starts over again. Restart or restart with mouse held down as apple suggests doesn't do anything.

Blank DVDs/ CDs do not mount, only once they have been written to.

Yeah definitely sounds like the drive is having issues. What Mac do you have? Year model? Apple menu > About This Mac.
