I use an NEC display alongside of my iMac27. This might sound really elementary, but when I launch a particular app, how do I get that window to consistently appear on the display of my preference?

uncheck displays have separate spaces in Mission Control. You will find a few Apple programs which will not listen to where user wants them placed.

I'm a bit confused with your response since I am not familiar with Mission Control. But it seems like if I launch MC I can drag & drop the window of a particular app onto the desktop of my choice. Seems to work. Am I correct?
uncheck "displays have separate spaces". this make the two displays act as one display. Dock will be where you placed the arrangement bar in the display pane. Some Apple programs will not relocate where you want but there aren't that many.
who isn't or hasn't been confused with mission control over the years.
