whenever i try to upgrade my imac it says the "package is missing or damaged." it prompts me to restart the computer, which i've done several times, but the same message keeps popping up. i have tried holding shift and holding ctrl + r to go to safety mode but nothing comes up when i hold both separately for a substantial amount of time. can someone help?

i cant get back to the normal computer screen, so i cant download a new version of it. im just stuck on a loop where its telling me to download it by restarting, but it wont work, so it tells me to restart again, and it keeps going.
i tried going to the starter disk utility, but no disks were listed, so i don't believe i do. i read something about downloading a new copy of mac os sierra on a flash drive and trying to install it like that, so im going to try it tomorrow.
i tried to copy a new version of macOS sierra onto my 16 GB flash drive, but it keeps saying the "file is too large for the volume's format." i deleted all my files from the flash drive and it still didnt work. any suggestions?
I guess you didn't follow the instructions in that link I gave you.
You need to let the installer create the bootable media for you, you can't just copy the file across.
It will need to format the drive specially to create the install media. It will erase everything. 16gb is big enough, but if you have any data you wish to save on that disk you will need to back it up manually.
Are you running a PPC iMac? What is the year model of your iMac?
No, it is a 21.5 inch, late 2013 model.
Do you have an older version of OS X on an external disk that you can install temporarily?
Or a Time Machine disk you can boot off?
