Trying to back up a iphone 6 that hasn't been backed up since Dec 26, 2016. Having issues with the back up, system won't allow us to back it up.

What specifically happens when you try to back up? Do you have iTunes 12.6.3 or later? Windows 7 or later or Mac OS 10.9 or later? Have you tried backing up to iCloud?
What happens when you try, do you get an error message? And are you backing up to your computer or iCloud?
