I need help, my MacBook Pro 2012 just froze during the installation of the latest software update of the Mac OS X sierra. What should I do? The screen is white with a small gray circle with a line drawn through it.

This means your machine could not find a valid startup drive.

I suggest you power off your machine. hold down the option key, power on your machine. continue holding down the option key until you see some icons. Do you see your startup drive?

I tried the steps you outlined, it allowed me to connect to a WiFi network and then select my hard drive but when it was loading it then still gave me the error sign and wouldn’t restart. I’m taking it to an apple store near me to see what they can do.
