erasing iPhone to unlock

I have some questions regarding erasing my iPhone.

Do I need to disconnect from iCloud and other paired devices before erasing? Meaning, should I sign out of my iCloud or "unpair" my iPhone from iCloud before erasing? Should I unpair my other devices from iCloud before erasing my iPhone? Does this make any sense? I am only trying to erase my iPhone to unlock from T-Mobile, the worst carrier on the planet. They require that I first erase my iPhone to reset it.

I'm a tech dummy. I don't want to erase my iPhone and then have my iCloud erase in suit and then my devices erased as well because they are paired. This is my fear. I don't know what I'm doing. Please help. Thanks very much.

Sincerely,

Me

First you make a backup using iCloud or locally using iTunes.

If you've applied and get a message from your provider that your iPhone is carrier unlock,

then you switch Find My iPhone OFF (Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Find My iPhone: OFF) and restore the iPhone as new.
You will get a message if it's successful. You can then restore from your backup after that.
