I am way beyond such simple answers. But thank you for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated. Let me clarify: I have many files in a folder in iCloud. On my iPhone (Files app) they are all shown without any file extensions. Some of them have the same file name - and because the file extensions is not shown I cannot tell which is which. Up to five files may have the same name (jpg, pages, numbers, pdf, band). So what I actually was asking for: Is there a way to make Apple show me the file extensions? Once I am willing to keep opening files until I find the right one, but always? Never!
I’m looking for a solution to the same issue where you can tell which filetype is which. I have noticed that if you long press on a file you can choice to view the file info which will let you know what the filetype is. It is not great, but you don‘t have to open the file to find out.
Exactly the same issue. It's common for me to use the same file name just as you mention for both a pages and PDF file, I want to use the PDF when sending to others and Pages for my personal editing, etc.

Did you happen to save one as a Pages document?
Open one and see what app opens.
