Delete books from iCloud but keep on device?

I downloaded some books to my iPad and found that they completely filled up my iCloud space. I want to stop using iCloud for iBooks, but if I delete my iCloud iBooks content, it also deletes it from my iPad. Is there a way to delete the content from iCloud and also disable future uploads from iBooks, but keep the content that I specifically downloaded to this iPad?

I don't want to hide them. I want to delete them from iCloud so they stop using up all of my available space. However I want them on my iPad where I read them. I never wanted them on iCloud in the first place. I should clarify these are PDFs, not books bought through iTunes.

You can hide them though not remove them -- iBooks: How do you delete old books?.
